Thinkific Review (2026): Unlimited Courses, One Condition
Most cheap plans in this category are cheap because they are missing something load-bearing. Thinkific's is not, and that single fact is why it takes the highest grade on this site.
Basic is $40 a month billed annually, or $54 billed monthly, and it carries unlimited courses and no platform cut of your sales through Thinkific's own checkout. There is a condition attached to that second claim, and this review spends a good deal of time on it, but the headline survives the scrutiny.
The plans, on both billing cycles
From the pricing page on 21 September 2026:
- Basic — $54 a month billed monthly, $40 billed annually. 1 admin.
- Start — $109 monthly, $82 annually. 2 admins.
- Grow — $219 monthly, $164 annually. 6 admins.
- Plus — custom pricing, sales contact required.
Unlimited courses on all of them. A ceiling of 10,000 current students on Basic, Start and Grow alike.
Note the shape of that ladder. Nothing about it is tied to how much you sell. You move up when you need more people in the admin, or more advanced marketing tooling — not when you have a good month. Compare that to Teachable, where the cheapest plan takes 7.5% of everything, and the difference in philosophy is stark.
- Thinkific Basic$54 → $40 25.9%
- Thinkific Start$109 → $82 24.8%
- Thinkific Grow$219 → $164 25.1%

Unlimited courses on the cheapest plan is the story
It is worth dwelling on how unusual this is. Kajabi's $143-a-month plan allows five products. Teachable's $29 plan allows five. Podia's $42 plan allows fifty. Thinkific's $40 plan allows as many as you like.
For anyone with a catalogue — a set of short workshops, a library of modules sold separately, a bundle plus its components — this removes the single most common reason to upgrade in the first year. You are not rationed by the thing you are trying to do more of.
The condition on the 0% fee
Here is the part the marketing does not put on a billboard, and the reason this review runs 8.4 rather than 9.
Thinkific takes no platform cut when you take payment through Thinkific Payments. That processor, which runs on Stripe underneath, charges 2.9% for card payments; Thinkific's support documentation states the rate as 2.9% plus 30 cents for cards issued in the United States and Canada. On a $500 sale that is $14.80 to the processor, nothing to Thinkific, and $485.20 to you.
If instead you connect your own Stripe or PayPal account, a Third-Party Payment Gateway Fee applies. Thinkific documents that this fee exists, that it applies to your first million dollars of sales in a calendar year, and that it does not apply on the Plus tier.
What Thinkific does not publish anywhere we could read it is the actual percentage, per plan. Third-party sites quote a tiered scale; we are not going to repeat numbers we could not confirm at source. If you intend to keep an existing payment processor, treat the rate as an open question and ask Thinkific directly before you commit — because on the Basic plan, a percentage charged on top of Stripe's own would materially change the arithmetic in this review.
That is a real deduction. It is also, in fairness, a less aggressive arrangement than Kajabi's, which charges a 2% surcharge on Basic for the same choice and says so on the pricing page.
The student ceiling
Ten thousand current students on Basic, Start and Grow. Not lifetime enrolments — current ones.
For the overwhelming majority of sellers this is a number they will never approach, and treating it as a serious constraint would be dishonest. But it is a ceiling, it does not move as you climb the ladder, and it is not mentioned in any comparison we have seen. If you run free lead-magnet courses at scale alongside paid ones, the free enrolments count too, and the ceiling arrives sooner than the revenue would suggest.
The seat limit is the real upgrade trigger
One admin on Basic, two on Start, six on Grow. In a category where the cheapest plan usually fails you on volume, Thinkific's fails you on staffing, and that is worth planning around rather than discovering.
The moment a co-instructor, an editor or a virtual assistant needs their own login rather than your password, you are on Start at $82 a month billed annually — double the Basic price. That is a sharper step than it looks on the pricing table, and it arrives for reasons that have nothing to do with how well the courses are selling.
The compensation is that it arrives on your schedule rather than the platform's. Nothing about growing revenue forces the upgrade, which is the opposite of how a percentage fee behaves.
What it is not
Thinkific is not an all-in-one marketing suite. The email and funnel tooling exists but is not the reason anyone chooses this platform, and if you want a single product that also runs your broadcasts, sequences and landing pages, Kajabi does that job better and charges accordingly.
Thinkific is a course platform that sells courses well and leaves the marketing stack to you. For most people that is the correct division of labour, because most people already have an email tool they like.
Verdict
8.4, a B+. Not a perfect product, and not the most capable one here — but the one whose pricing structure is least likely to punish you for succeeding, which is the thing this site weights most heavily.
The deduction for the unpublished gateway-fee rates is genuine and would be easy for Thinkific to fix by printing a number. Until it does, plan on using Thinkific Payments and the headline arithmetic holds. Against the rest of the field, it comes out on top of the best online course platforms shortlist; the case for paying four times as much is in the Kajabi review.
Questions from the back row
- How much does Thinkific cost in 2026?
- Basic is $54 a month billed monthly or $40 billed annually. Start is $109 or $82. Grow is $219 or $164. Plus is custom-priced. Those figures were read from thinkific.com/pricing on 21 September 2026, where Thinkific also shows annual savings of $173, $330 and $660 a year respectively.
- Does Thinkific charge transaction fees?
- Thinkific takes no platform cut on paid plans when you use Thinkific Payments, which charges 2.9% — its support documentation states 2.9% plus 30 cents for US and Canadian cards. If you use your own Stripe or PayPal instead, a third-party payment gateway fee applies to your first $1M of annual sales, except on the Plus tier.
- How many courses can I sell on Thinkific Basic?
- Unlimited. Every paid Thinkific tier allows unlimited courses, which is unusual — Kajabi Basic allows five products and Teachable Starter allows five. Thinkific's limits are on admin seats and on current students, not on your catalogue.
- Does Thinkific have a free plan?
- Not any more. As of 21 September 2026 Thinkific offers a 30-day free trial, which is the joint longest in this comparison, but no permanent free tier.
