Gumroad is not a course platform and does not claim to be one. It is a checkout with a storefront attached, and people sell courses through it anyway because it asks for no money until they make some. For a first course that is a genuinely different proposition from everything else on this site, and it deserves assessing on its own terms.

The terms, read from the pricing page on 21 September 2026, are 10% plus 50 cents per transaction on sales you bring yourself, 30% per transaction on sales that Gumroad's Discover marketplace originates, and no monthly fee at all.

Where the arithmetic favours it

Take a course that sells $300 in a month. Gumroad takes roughly $30 plus the per-sale 50 cents. Thinkific Basic takes $40 whether you sold anything or not. Teachable Starter takes $29 plus 7.5%.

Take a month where the course sells nothing. Gumroad takes nothing. Thinkific takes $40. Teachable takes $29. Kajabi takes $143.

That asymmetry is the whole case, and it matters more than the percentage in exactly one situation: when you do not yet know whether anyone will buy. A subscription is a bet that you will sell. Gumroad is not a bet at all.

Where the arithmetic turns

Fast. At $2,000 a month in sales, Gumroad's cut is roughly $200 a month plus per-sale cents, against $40 for Thinkific Basic. Across a year that is about $2,400 against $480 — five times the cost, for a product with materially less course functionality.

At $5,000 a month it is roughly $500 a month against $179 a year for Sensei Pro. There is no reading of that comparison in which Gumroad wins.

So the sensible way to use Gumroad is deliberately and temporarily: sell the first version through it, find out whether the demand is real, and move when the monthly cut exceeds a subscription. That threshold sits somewhere around $400 to $500 a month in sales, depending which platform you would move to.

The question Gumroad does not answer

Here is the deduction that costs it most in the grade.

Gumroad's pricing page states the fee — 10% plus 50 cents direct, 30% via Discover — and says nothing about card processing. It does not say that processing is included in that percentage. It does not say it is charged on top. Independent fee calculators assert that processing is charged on top for direct sales and bundled into the 30% Discover rate, but Gumroad's own page is silent, and we are not in the business of printing someone else's assumption as a fact.

The practical effect is that on a $500 sale we can tell you Gumroad takes $50.50 and we cannot tell you exactly what reaches your bank: $449.50 if processing is inside the cut, $434.70 if it is on top. That is a $15 uncertainty on a single sale, on the one number a seller most needs to know.

Every other platform in this comparison states its processing position plainly. Podia prints the processor's rate on its own pricing page. Kajabi publishes its rate per tier. Thinkific documents its in support. This is not a difficult disclosure to make, and its absence is a choice.

FigureWhat comes off one $500 sale before it reaches you
  • Gumroad−$50.50 to −$65.30 keeps $434.70–$449.50

Arithmetic on the take-home figures: $500 minus what you keep. Card processing at 2.9% + 30¢.

As a course product

Thin, and honestly so. Gumroad will host a video and a set of files behind a purchase. It will not give a student a structured path through modules, track what they have completed, issue a certificate, drip content on a schedule or run a quiz.

For a single recorded workshop sold as a download, none of that matters. For anything that a buyer is meant to work through over weeks, all of it does, and the difference shows up in completion rates and refund requests rather than in your checkout.

There is also a positioning question. A course delivered as a Gumroad file feels like a product you bought; a course delivered on Thinkific or Kajabi feels like a programme you joined. That perception is worth real money at higher price points.

Discover, and the 30%

The marketplace deserves a fair word. Thirty percent is a large number, but it is charged on sales that Gumroad found for you, and the alternative to a Gumroad-originated sale is frequently no sale.

Treat it the way you would treat any marketplace: as paid distribution with a very high take rate, not as a channel to build a business on. If most of your revenue is arriving through Discover, you do not have a course business — you have a listing.

Verdict

6.8, a C+. Not a recommendation to run a school on, and a sensible tool used narrowly.

Use Gumroad to find out whether a course idea has buyers without renting anything, then move the moment the monthly cut passes a subscription. The platforms worth moving to, with the crossover arithmetic for each, are ranked on the best online course platforms shortlist, and the fee mechanics behind that decision are set out in how course-platform transaction fees really work.

Questions from the back row

How much does Gumroad take per sale?
10% plus 50 cents on sales through your own profile or direct links, and 30% on sales that Gumroad Discover originates. There is no monthly fee. Those figures are quoted from gumroad.com/pricing as read on 21 September 2026.
Does Gumroad's 10% include payment processing?
Gumroad's pricing page does not say, in either direction. Third-party calculators state that card processing is charged on top for direct sales and bundled into the 30% Discover rate, but we could not confirm that at source. On a $500 sale you keep between $434.70 and $449.50 depending on which is true.
Is Gumroad cheaper than a course platform?
Below roughly $400 to $500 a month in sales, yes, because it charges nothing in months you sell nothing. Above that the percentage overtakes any subscription here. At $2,000 a month Gumroad costs about five times Thinkific Basic.
Can you run a proper course on Gumroad?
You can deliver videos and files behind a purchase. You cannot structure modules with progress tracking, drip content on a schedule, run quizzes or issue certificates. For a single recorded workshop that is enough; for a multi-week programme it is not.
