Every other platform on this site rents you a business. Sensei sells you a component and expects you to own the rest, and the price of that arrangement is the most interesting number in the category: $179 a year, flat, with no cut of anything you sell.

One correction first, because it is the single most common error written about this product. The free Sensei LMS plugin builds courses. It does not sell them. Taking money requires the WooCommerce integration, and that ships inside Sensei Pro. If you have read that you can sell courses for nothing with Sensei, you have read something wrong.

The pricing, in full

From senseilms.com/pricing on 21 September 2026:

  • Sensei Free — $0, open source, community supported.
  • Interactive Blocks — $5 a month, billed $60 a year.
  • Sensei Pro — $15 a month, billed $179 a year.
  • Sensei Agency — $30 a month, billed $360 a year, covering up to 20 sites or one multisite network.

No transaction fee or revenue share is stated anywhere on that page. That absence is the product.

What the flat fee means at volume

Run the comparison at $5,000 a month in sales — a good but unremarkable year for a course business.

Sensei Pro costs $179. Not $179 a month; $179 for the year. Thinkific Basic costs $480 for the year on annual billing. Kajabi Basic costs $1,716. Teachable Starter costs $348 plus 7.5% of $60,000, which is $4,500, for a total of $4,848.

Nothing else is close, and the gap widens every year you keep trading. At double that volume the hosted platforms roughly double in cost or worse; Sensei stays at $179.

That is the entire commercial argument, and it is a strong one. It is also incomplete.

What you pay instead

Responsibility, and a running cost nobody puts on a pricing page.

You need WordPress hosting capable of serving video-adjacent traffic without falling over. You need a domain. You need backups you trust and updates applied on time. You need a WooCommerce payment gateway configured correctly, which means the card processing — roughly 2.9% plus 30 cents — is still there, exactly as it is everywhere else.

And you need to be the person who fixes it. There is no support desk that owns the whole stack, because there is no single stack: there is WordPress, a plugin, a theme, WooCommerce and a processor, assembled by you. When a checkout stops working, the question of whose fault it is becomes your question to answer.

This is not a flaw in Sensei. It is the deal. Hosted platforms charge you a subscription and a percentage to be the ones who answer that question.

Who this is genuinely for

Two groups, and they are narrower than the price makes them look.

The first is anyone already running a WordPress site with WooCommerce on it. For you, Sensei Pro is a $179 addition to infrastructure that already exists and that you already maintain. There is almost no argument for paying a hosted platform instead.

The second is anyone whose course revenue is large enough that percentage fees have become the biggest software cost in the business. At that point the hours are cheap relative to the money, and moving off a percentage is worth real effort.

If you are neither — if you are testing whether you can sell a course at all, and do not currently run a website — the honest advice is that Sensei is the wrong place to start. The setup effort will consume the energy you should be spending on the course itself.

The course tooling

Competent and unflashy. Lessons, modules, quizzes with several question types, prerequisites, drip scheduling and completion tracking are all present. Interactive Blocks, the $60-a-year add-on, extends what you can put inside a lesson with the WordPress block editor.

It is not as polished as Thinkific's student experience and not as feature-dense as Kajabi's. What it has instead is total control: it is your WordPress site, the course pages are your templates, and nothing about the design is constrained by someone else's theme system.

The Automattic factor

Sensei is built by Automattic, which also makes WooCommerce and runs WordPress.com. That matters for one practical reason: the WooCommerce integration is first-party rather than a third-party bridge, so the thing most likely to break in a WordPress course setup is maintained by the same company that maintains both halves of it.

It is a modest advantage and worth naming, because in the WordPress plugin economy it is not the norm.

Verdict

7.9, a B. On pure economics it is the best answer on this site by a very wide margin. On total cost including your own time, it is a specialist choice.

If WordPress is already your furniture, Sensei Pro is close to unarguable at $179 a year. If it is not, budget honestly for the evenings before deciding, and compare against the hosted field on the best online course platforms shortlist — the cheapest hosted alternative is assessed in the Thinkific review.

Questions from the back row

Can I sell courses with the free Sensei LMS plugin?
No. The free plugin creates and delivers courses but does not take payment. Selling requires the WooCommerce integration, which is part of Sensei Pro at $179 a year. This is the most commonly repeated error about Sensei and it is worth checking before you plan around it.
Does Sensei charge a transaction fee?
No transaction fee or revenue share is stated anywhere on the Sensei pricing page. You still pay your own payment gateway — roughly 2.9% plus 30 cents on a US card through a WooCommerce processor — because that is the card network's charge and it exists on every platform.
How much does Sensei cost in 2026?
Sensei Free is $0. Interactive Blocks is $5 a month, billed $60 a year. Sensei Pro is $15 a month, billed $179 a year. Sensei Agency is $30 a month, billed $360 a year, covering up to 20 sites or one multisite network. Read from senseilms.com/pricing on 21 September 2026.
Is Sensei cheaper than Teachable or Kajabi?
On software cost, dramatically. At $5,000 a month in sales, Sensei Pro costs $179 for the year against roughly $4,848 for Teachable Starter and $1,716 for Kajabi Basic. What it does not include is hosting, a domain, maintenance, and your time when something goes wrong.
